ECDL for Educators courseware - designed to help school staff develop practical computing skills

Launching at the National Education Exhibition and Conference for Wales 2003 is the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) for Educators courseware (www.educatorsecdl.com) – a comprehensive seven-module teacher-training programme from Aston Swann.  Designed specifically to help Teachers, Support Staff, School Managers and Administrators develop practical computing skills for teaching and learning in the classroom, ECDL for Educators courseware can be delivered face-to-face, as a self study option or as a combination of the two, enabling it to be adapted to fit into the Teacher’s working timetable.

The ECDL for Educators courseware has been developed by Aston Swann, a Cardiff-based company which has over ten years’ experience delivering computer training to the education sector. The new ECDL for Educators courseware is a tailored version of the established ECDL qualification, recognised by employers in the business world throughout Europe as an illustration of employee competence in computing.  The implementation of ECDL in the UK is managed by the British Computer Society and Aston Swann is the first company in the country to tailor the course for a specific ‘vertical sector’ (i.e. education).

Creating lesson plans using a word processor, collating sorting and charting classroom data using a spreadsheet and effectively searching the Internet for classroom resources are just a few of the very practical skills that can be acquired.

“Computer skills are acquired almost coincidentally as Teachers learn to download graphics, import information and incorporate hotlinks to Internet-based resources whilst creating a lesson plan, for example,” explains Debbie Skyrme, Education Programme Developer, Aston Swann.  “This makes the ECDL for Educators courseware particularly suitable for those Teachers that have had a bad experience of ICT or for those who find it hard to appreciate why the DfES is encouraging them to integrate ICT across the curriculum.”

The learning programme consists of seven ECDL modules with a specific focus on classroom use.  These include:

·         Concepts of IT

·         Using the Computer and Managing Files

·         Word Processing – to manage classroom tasks, activities and lesson plans

·         Spreadsheets – to collate, sort and chart data

·         Database – to create, monitor and organise lists, forms and reports

·         Presentation – as a visual interactive learning tool

·         Information and Communication – using the NGfL, effective searching for online classroom resources and communicating by e-mail.

“I felt the need to extend my computer skills to become more efficient at administration, to reduce my work load, support my colleagues in their use of ICT, and develop and extend the use of ICT to improve teaching and learning across the curriculum, and so decided to enroll on the ECDL for Educators course”, said Helen Gurling, ICT Coordinator, Windsor School.  I received excellent training at Aston Swann, in delightful surroundings, and they have turned the computer into an invaluable resource for me.”

The ECDL for Educators courseware is a respected standard for ICT competence.  It is a measurable demonstration of a Teacher’s computer literacy and is designed to accommodate the varying levels and phases of education suitable for In Service Training (INSET) and Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

Licences for LEAs, Teacher Training Colleges and Professional Trainers are available on request.  Aston Swann is offering a pricing structure to facilitate varying budgets and the different levels of training required.  The initial registration fee is £595 per site plus £30 for each delegate using the ECDL for Educators product.  This is a one off payment covering all seven ECDL for Educators modules.
