ICDL for Education in United Arab Emirates

Aston Swann UK introduces courseware in Arabic and English to help teachers and pupils work towards an internationally recognised qualification

Aston Swann UK (Hall 8 Stand 8-1) is using Gitex 2004 to showcase its ICDL for Education teacher-training courseware, a step-by-step programme designed specifically to help teachers and pupils acquire fundamental computing skills that will enhance teaching and learning in classrooms across the world.

Aston Swann has been invited to participate on the stand of the ICDL GCC Foundation – the organisation responsible for the implementation of ICDL in the Gulf Region - and presents the only International Computer Driving Licence (ICDL) courseware that is specifically tailored towards the unique requirements of the education community.

ICDL for Education courseware prepares teachers for the globally renowned ICDL qualification encouraging them to acquire new computer skills, as they create useful classroom documents on a word processor, manage data using a spreadsheet and search the Internet for classroom resources. As a result, teachers become competent and confident in using Information and Communications Technology (ICT) as a tool for learning in the classroom.

Teachers across the UAE are encouraged to undertake the ICDL qualification as a benchmark of their skills and confidence in using ICT as a tool for educating and learning.
Available in both Arabic and English format, the courseware is suitable for teachers of all ages and experience levels and learning can be delivered either face-to-face, as self-study or as a combination of both. It can also be managed and supported on line. The courseware supports the continuing professional development requirements of all educators using ICT.

A programme to up-skill teams of teacher trainers is being undertaken by Aston Swann. Teacher trainers will implement the ICDL for Education programme in schools and colleges throughout the region and will support and monitor the progress of their colleagues as they work towards the ICDL qualification.

Wendy Swann of Aston Swann UK, who is directing the ICDL for Education programme, says, “We are thoroughly looking forward to our work with teachers across the UAE region. We bring a great deal of experience in using IT in teaching and learning to this project.”
“Our training teams and programmes are in place and the enthusiasm and anticipation from teachers as they work towards their ICDL qualification is very attainable,” says Mrs Swann.
“Educational Institutions in Dubai have made us most welcome and we feel very privileged to be working with them to bring this opportunity to Teachers in the region.”

The 7 ICDL modules covered by the courseware are:

  • Concepts of Information Technology (IT) - get to grips with the technology available in schools and understand the technical terminology involved
  • Using the computer and managing files - feel comfortable using Microsoft Windows, create and save documents – and find them again
  • Word processing for classroom and homework tasks - learn skills to create text documents for managing homework and classroom tasks and activities
  • Spreadsheets - to collate, sort and chart data - acquire the skills to process numerical data to enter and chart school projects, exam results and pupil records.
  • Database – school data handling - understand what a database can do and how to set one up such as a lending library and an after-school club database
  • Presentations – produce electronic displays and printouts - classroom presentations for printing, animated slide shows and the Internet. Create a slide show for parents’ evening, a mathematical game and present a class project.
  • Information and Communication - effective e-mail and internet use - learn how to quickly search the Internet for appropriate education resources and feel confident sending and receiving e-mails and attachments.
